Lot of people have been criticizing Blackberry for launching bbm so late and that too for other mobile OS like android and iOS. Whatsapp has been dominating the mobile messenger space and is one of key reasons for the downfall of Blackberry at large who had built a bbm community some years ago. Largely people now don't feel the need of the bbm.
But I think there is still some space for bbm, especially for people who does not like anonymous messages. Bbm allows connection between 2 people only by invitation.
If you want to keep your messenger contact list restrictive, then bbm is the way to go.
